World Shutdown Day Tomorrow

shutdown-day.gifCan you go an entire 24 hours without your computer?

53,792 (current count at the time of this post) worldwide have already said they can. 8,519 say they can't...hey, at least they're honest.

What is this? It's World Shutdown Day, and it's tomorrow, March 24th, 2007.

Can you imagine what powerful effects this will have? And no, I don't just mean environmentally...

Our computers are one of the biggest energy hogs and thus, carbon emitters, in our homes (if you leave them on and plugged in all day).

In addition to that, they also suck us into a virtual world and out of the real world. (WTF?! you mean my level 120 RuneScape character isn't really me?!)

From the site that's spear-heading this initiative:

"It is obvious that people would find life extremely difficult without computers, maybe even impossible. If they disappeared for just one day, would we be able to cope?

Be a part of one of the biggest global experiments ever to take place on the internet. The idea behind the experiment is to find out how many people can go without a computer for one whole day, and what will happen if we all participate!"

What can I do with my computer off for an entire day?

  • Read a book
  • Plant a garden of herbs or flowers
  • Play ultimate Frisbee in your local park
  • Talk with your friends or neighbors (in real life!)
  • Make a rain barrel
  • Ride a bicycle
  • and much, much more!

What are some fun ideas you have for World Shutdown Day tomorrow?
