The Planet Isn't F*cked Up, People Are

It's Friday, and we could all use a little laugh eh?

Well who says you can't laugh and go, "hmmmm", at the same time?

Check out this hilarious and thought provoking bit on climate change by the late George Carlin.

Be warned, this isn't really for the faint of heart, closed minded, or folks offended by the f-bomb.

I have a friend who finds it hard to believe that in the roughly 200 years since the industrial revolution, humans could have caused enough damage to doom our planet.

Is he right?

George Carlin makes the point that in the battle between people and planet, the planet has a much better record...

4.5 billion years (planet) vs. maybe 200,000 years (people).

In the early 90's classic, Jurassic Park, Jeff Goldblum as "Dr. Ian Malcom" says,

"If there is one thing the history of evolution has taught us it's that life will not be contained. Life breaks free, expands to new territory, and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously."

Can people REALLY destroy the planet or will life break free with or without us?

So even though the video is hysterical...as all George Carlin material is...what is the fight against climate change REALLY about?

Is it about saving the planet or saving ourselves?

What do you think?

no crusades, just caring for each other and the big ole rock we live on. sounds good to me. why do people always have to go all crazy and self-righteous about stuff?

As for good intentions...i seem to remember something about the road to hell being paved with those. ;-)

While I don't share George Carlin's enthusiasm for plastic ;) I think it's fair to say that humanity has always had control issues (and a very large ego) that might be surfacing in our efforts to become environmental saviors. Of course people want to stick around! All species want to survive. I know very few who are ready to let nature reclaim its own--to become apart of that cycle of existence. So they say "save the Earth" and mean "save US!"
Yeah, it could be about saving ourselves on a large scale, but I'm sure folks have good intentions individually--don't we all want a better living environment, eh? (Not to say we need crusade for it...)

I'm not about to stop recycling plastic or considering environmental wellness just because Mother Earth might want us outta here. I'm sure she'll find a way to take care of business despite our efforts. Let humanity be humanity while it lasts. And hopefully, along the way, we'll learn to take care of ourselves a little better. As George implied, it is what it is. :)

I was actually listening to a radio talk show a few weeks ago and they made an interesting point. 'It is very arrogant of humans to think they can have a big enough impact on our planet to bring about the changes that are supposedly going to bring it to ruins. Earth time is not measured in seconds, minutes, hours, years, etc. It is measured in geological terms. We (humans) are but a tiny little blip that could be missed in less than the blink of an eye. Because of that, we can virtually have no impact...at least not one that is lasting or as damaging as people would have us believe.'

After listening to the facts presented, I must say that I tend to agree. Further, if you go back and look at climate changes as far back as records have been kept, it appears (and seems to be provable) that we are in no more of a 'global warming' situation than has ever been experienced. Interesting.
