kids-summer-campDo you ever wish that you would have learned the cool “green” stuff that you know now, a few years earlier? If so, why not give your kids, or kids you know, a chance to do just that…a jumpstart on learning, if you will.

How you might ask? Summer camp of course!

Don’t get me wrong, there’s always the option of giving a green book to read, but eco-friendly camp just sounds WAY more fun.

Read on to check out a list of several great ones.

Green Summer Camps For Kids

These “green camps” will teach kids about:

  • Sustainable living – kids ages 8 to 12 at The Living Earth School learn the philosophy of living close to nature, wilderness survival, and how nurture their connection to the earth.
  • Organic farming – kids, kindergarten through 6th grade, at Gwynn Valley Camp learn firsthand about picking veggies, milking cows, and gathering eggs.
  • Eco-friendly building programs and design – at Camp Calleva they have kids help build rainwater collections system for crops, etc and work on things such as wind turbine designs to improve our clean energy future.
  • Conscious living classes – kids ages 13 to 17 at Omega Teen Camp in New York enjoy a variety of classes from meditation, yoga, and thai massage, to high ropes courses.
  • Naturalist explorations – kids at Green River Preserve go on daily hikes.

As if that wasn’t cool enough, if your kid is mature and more adventure prone then they might enjoy a BoldEarth Adventure. These adventures have kids/teens doing anything from restoring hiking trails in Colorado, to building chimneys in South America to help reduce pollution.

Interested yet? Take a look at American Camp Association or Choice Camps and search for “green camps”. You’ll find plenty of options such as the ones above, in your area and for your child’s age group.

Teaching Kids To Be Green At Home

Now, if green summer camp isn’t your thing or you find it a bit too expensive, why not take it upon yourself to teach your kids what you know?

Whether it be camping in the backyard or going on hikes, you will not only be teaching your children fun and eco-friendly practices but will also be spending quality time with them.

Win-win.

Have you, or anyone you know, been to or worked at a green camp before? If so, what was your experience?
