Ever wanted to live green by purchasing some reusable shopping bags for those grocery store runs but don't want to pay $15 for each of them?
Publix has your solution...reusable grocery bags for .99 cents!!
Some of my and my wife's friends gave us our Christmas presents in a couple of these bags and then my wife came home with another one after a trip to the store. When she showed me the receipt (and that is the actual receipt pictured), I couldn't believe it!
Now this is what we're about here at The FUN Times Guide to Living Green--taking those steps into a more sustainable lifestyle should be enjoyable, natural, and shouldn't break the bank.
Thanks Publix for making that possible!
As I've mentioned before, around 30 billion plastic bags are used (and mostly carelessly disposed of) every year in America. The amount of groceries that used to fill up 15-20 plastic bags, now fits in our 3 new reusable Publix shopping bags.
That means that $3 in reusable shopping bags reduces a HUGE impact on the environment and saves me time by not having to make 4 trips to the car to unload our groceries...which is my job at our house.
Check out more ways Publix helps you live green by reading more about the grocery store here at The FUN Times Guide to Living Green and by browsing their GreenWise Market Magazine (you can even get a free subscription).
Do you use reusable shopping bags? If so, where'd you get them and how much did they set you back?
Check out my 4 favorite stylish, cheap, reusable canvas bags and totes.

iam enjoy to read all post this blog. How can u find ideas for this blog. Nice Blog
The Trader Joe's bags are phenomenal! They have been coming out with "new & improved" bags, larger sizes, insulated, more durable. The only drawback is that the price for each one can go up to $6.99 but looking at the big pictures, it's still a bargain for the environment!
That is awesome people are starting to catch on to a Greener world. Not to mention the amount of oil that goes into making plastic bags. I have found a great website with very cheap reusable bags. Check out www.fivestargreenbag.com
After returning from Ireland and witnessing their phenomenal success with transitioning from plastic bags to reusable bags, I desperately want to get involved in doing my part here in the USA and elsewhere to promote this simple eco-friendly solution. Can you please give me some pointers into what type of reusable bags are best with best recyclable properties, average life span, minimum effect to produce on environment etc. There are may to choose from; cotton, canvas, jute, polypropylene, nylon, burlap, etc,
I appreciate all information you can help me with in this early stage of my research. I know that we must all make a difference in reducing the massive quantities of plastic going into the landfills, streams, and oceans. Please help me to be a real fighter for this effort as I am truly on fire with my potential to make a difference and leave a noble legacy for future generations.
Thank You,
Steve C. Carty
Awesome Aly! too bad indeed, that the bagger put them in plastic bags! ha ha.
I don't know if 5 will be too many for you, but i will tell you that for just my wife and I (who also shop only once a week), we fill up 4 of the bags per trip.
If you realize you don't need 1 or 2 of them, just give 'em away and help someone "catch on" to the trend, as you said. ;-)
I just picked up 5 of the Publix bags today! I can't wait to use them (I didn't use them today-i was just out shopping with a friend.) I wonder if 5 is too many. I only shop one week at a time and it it's just my husband and I. Too bad the bagger put them in a plastic bag for me to carry them out!!
I plan on picking up 2 of the Target ones too. I would have a hard time bringing a Publix bag to Target :) I wish more people will catch onto the reusable bag trend!!
@cynthia, Thanks for the heads up about the bags at Whole Foods! Sounds like they look great!
Whole Foods just came out with a $.99 bag that's made from 80% post-consumer plastic. If it ever gets a hole or tear from normal wear, they'll replace it for free. Plus the bag is really bright and colorful and it says "A Better Bag" one each end.
Also HEB has a nice big heavy canvas tote bag for $3.99. The design on it is really attractive. They have a smaller mesh type green bag for $.99 that's made from post-consumer plastic.
All these bags are near the registers. This is in Houston TX.
that's awesome ally! You're right, reusable grocery bags are great...especially when they're free. I wish we had a Trader Joe's in my area (which is Nashville, TN).
great ideas and nice post Leah. Sorry it took me so long to approve your comment. I mistakenly read my email notification as an email from you, not a comment.
Just last night i went grocery shopping at Kroger with my Publix bags. Ha ha, bad form i suppose, but the cashier thought it was funny.
Thanks for stopping by and you're welcome back any time.
Trader Joe's does this too. Actually, when they ran mine through they didn't even scan it. Regardless, it's a great way to do your bit and get a nifty bag out of it at the same time.
Good for you for promoting the use of reusable shopping bags--and kudos to your friends for packaging your Christmas gifts in reusable bags. I did something similar, which I wrote about here:
http://suddenlyfrugal.blogspot.com/2007/12/reduce-reuse-recycle-this-holiday.html
Also, keep in mind that you don't have to purchase a store's reusable bag only. If your home is like mine, then you've probably got a pile of canvas bags in the bottom of a closet somewhere--the kinds of bags that you pick up at conferences and such. You can use these free alternatives as your reusable shopping bag, too.
Keep up the good work.
Leah
