I’ll be the first to say it…getting gifts pretty much rocks!

With Christmas coming up, it’s easy to fall into the craziness of the holiday hustle and bustle while searching the stores for that one last perfect gift.

Instead of rushing out to the stores, why not take a second, breathe, and decide that you’ll give that loved one the best gift of all — yourself.

That’s right, your pure, uninterrupted presence. Don’t get me wrong, physical gifts are great, but time is growing to be an even scarcer commodity than money. And remember, Christmas is NOT your birthday.

Not only is the person getting the gift of a deeper relationship with you, but it’s also a gift that does help you live greener.

Giving the gift of yourself is reducing the consumption of trivial products that are made from cheap plastics, toxic chemicals, or even environmentally and socially costly electronics.

If you’re interested in giving the gift of your time this year, check out the following ideas for how to do that in a creative and meaningful way.

#1 – Silence — or turn off — your cell phone.

I know this might seem a bit silly, but I’ve seen it a million times (and been guilty of it a time or two).

People sitting around each other all locked into checking facebook, texting, or playing angry birds. while there are actual people with whom they could be spending time with.

So if you decide to spend time with those you love, spend time with them!

#2 – Get outdoors.

My family and I have started a holiday tradition of going on a hike Christmas day.

It’s a great way to spend time with those you love, while doing something active and enjoying nature.

Also, it allows great time for conversation and can create some great memories.

#3 – Check out the new holiday movie.

I know this kind of gets away from the whole idea of being present and spending time with your loved ones and family in that you’re sitting there for 2 to 3 hours not talking.

However, a movie can definitely give you something to talk about later and can also create some laughs together.

#4 – Play cards, board games, Pictionary, etc.

Whether it’s a game of poker or of Pictionary, there is sure to be some great memories with those you love from playing games together.

So with these ideas in mind, be sure to spend time with those you love this holiday season and give the gift of your presence instead of just physical gifts.

If you have started doing something similar with those you love, what are some things that you do? Have you missed the abundance of physical gifts over the gift of spending time with one another?
